A Study of Handedness in Male Schizophrenics


Abstract
Handedness of :Male Schizophrenics in Korea.
Handedness was -ssesse,l in 151 male schizophrenics and compared with findings in normal controls.
The schizophrenics differed significantly from Park.& Yang¢¥s male control groups in their handedness patto_-ns, ¢¥having a high proportion of right handers and a lower proportion of mixed handers while no difference in left handers. Compared with Annett¢¥s male control group, there were no differences in right and mixed handers except a lower proportion of left handers. ;33th results are not compatible with other studies and are als) not reasonable in the theoretical aspects.
It was revealed t¢¥l _t more t1an a half of mixed handes in this study (53.30) was born as left handers, but was brought up as mixed handers for cultural causes.
After considering t:ie acquired mixed handers, the schizophrenics did not differ from Annett¢¥s male control group, but differed significantly from Park & Yang¢¥s control group, having a higher proportion of right and left handers while a lower proportion of mixed handers.
This study gave no reasonable result when compared with Park & Yang¢¥s male control group but showed t¢¥-)at, in studying the handedness, it had great importance to consider the cultural effecting the handedness in Korea.
